A Week In A Life Of A Chairman – Day 3 Wednesday

public-speakingI talk to many people who fulfill volunteer roles similar to mine and one thing that most of us have in common is that we struggle with public speaking. We also share the knowledge that public speaking is a skill we need to master. Communication is key to fulfilling a Chairmanship role, whether it be at a meeting, with board members or speaking more formally in public. I’ve no background or experience of speaking in public, but I’m having to learn.

I was recently asked to speak to some workshop attendees about my organisation and tonight I fulfilled that request. It was an opportunity to raise awareness of what CBYCP has achieved, to explain its vision and how it has helped to improve the community. To my surprise, the workshop attendees listened attentively and asked lots of questions. To my even greater surprise, I survived.

It’s been a long day. I spent most of the morning and afternoon in the graveyard with a young volunteer. We had some boxes of plants delivered this morning and they needed planting before they withered. It was a beautifully sunny day and the air was full of the noise of birds singing. There were numerous butterflies fluttering about showing that the work we’re doing is improving the conditions for wildlife.

My volunteer hours for today: 13 hours
